Juanita Nielsen Community Centre

Named after local activist Juanita Nielsen, this heritage listed building accommodates a range of programs and provides an important focal point for community life in the neighbourhood of Woolloomooloo. Stephen Collier Architects’ competition proposal focused on creating strong connections with the surrounding context. Arranged in the form of a spiral within the historic structure of the existing building, the childcare and community facilities are arranged  around a full height central courtyard. While also helping to naturally ventilate and draw light into the building, this landscaped space is the heart of the building. A winding staircase draws visitors up to a roof garden where views of Woolloomooloo Bay and the harbour beyond all contribute to the strong sense of place.
